Walk - Central Station to Chippendale

Overview: Starting at the Railway Square bus station near Central Station, walk down Broadway, visit the Kensington St precinct, return to Broadway and walk past the former brewery into Chippendale via Abercrombie St. From here, follow the narrow streets and lanes to take in all the galleries of this compact suburb, finishing at the corner of Cleveland St and City Road for a bus back.

Start the walk at the Railway Square bus stop and head away from the city along Broadway.Turn left at Kensington St and walk to the Kensington Street Precinct for the first two galleries.

Return to Broadway, turn left, walk into the Central Park Mall and take the escalator to level 3 where you will find the next gallery

Continue along Broadway to Abercrombie St then turn left for the next group of galleries.

Continuing along Abercrombie St, cross the road and turn left into Dick St, walking to the end at Balfour St. Walk a short distance to the left along Balfour, then turn right into Wellington St and continue to the next gallery.

Wellington Street Projects 19-25 Wellington St Chippendale Hours Thur-Sun 11am-5pm during exhibitions email: info@wellingtonstprojects.com An artist-run initiative in a warehouse of shared studio spaces, fostering a creative exchange between artists and the community.

Walk back along Wellington St, then left along Balfour St to visit the White Rabbit Gallery that you would have seen on the way to the previous gallery. After visiting the exhibition, you can take refreshments in the tranquil Tea House, specialising in a wide range of Chinese teas.

White Rabbit Gallery 30 Balfour St Chippendale ph 8399 2867 Hours Wed-Sun 10am-5pm email: info@whiterabbitcollection.org One of the world's largest collections of contemporary Chinese art, focusing on works produced after 2000.

Continue walking to the left along Balfour St and cross the intersection with Meagher St for the next gallery.

Harrington Street Gallery 17 Meagher St Chippendale ph: 9319 7378 Hours Tues-Sun 10am-4pm email: rosscoady@gmail.com  This gallery is a registered artists' co-operative, designed to exhibit both developing and established artists without commercial restraints.

Coming out of the gallery, turn left and walk down Meagher St for the next gallery.

Living Art Gallery 1 Meagher St Chippendale ph: 9698 3310 email: livingart1@optusnet.com.au  This gallery welcomes interest from artists involved in any form of contemporary work. The large floor space is ideal for 3D works.

Continue a short distance along Meagher St to the intersection with Abercrombie St. Cross the road and walk a few doors to the right for the next gallery.

Spot81 Gallery 81 Abercrombie St Chippendale ph: 9690 0655 Hours Wed-Sun 11am-5pm email: info@spot81.com  This gallery exhibits emerging and established artists working in a diverse range of media.

Close by, you will find refreshments at the Chippendale Hotel and Cafe Giulia. To continue the walk, turn right out of the last gallery, cross the busy Abercrombie St at the Meagher St lights, walk to the right along Abercrombie St then turn left into Bartley St for the next gallery.

Tiny Tailor Gallery 10 Bartley St Chippendale ph: 0405 440 735 Hours Wed-Sat 10am-5pm. email: ali@tinytailor.com.au  This is a small gallery space exhibiting art for the home.

Return to Abercrombie St, turn left and walk to Cleveland St then turn right and walk along to the next gallery.

Street Front Gallery 64/92-100 Cleveland St Chippendale ph: 0424 379 937 Open during exhibitions. email: gallery@streetfrontgallery.com  This is a space for contemporary artists to showcase their work, focusing on music, art and design.

Continue walking along Cleveland St for a few blocks, then turn right into Pine St for the next gallery.

Pine Street Creative Arts Centre 64 Pine St Chippendale ph: 9245 1503 Hours Mon-Fri 9:30am-5:30pm Sat 11am-4pm email: pinestreet@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au . This is a City of Sydney Council initiative to provide a venue for progressive arts workshops, forums, events and exhibitions aimed at all sections of the community. The gallery, which is on the first floor, is only open during exhibitions.

Carry on along Pine St then turn left into Myrtle St where you can admire the Community Garden of flowers and herbs created by the residents on the street verge. Walk to Shepherd St, then turn left and walk to the last gallery.

Studio Cee 107b Shepherd St Chippendale ph: 0407 012 578 Open by appointment. email is via a form on the website. This is a working gallery showcasing the art of Sue Caddy.

Continue to Cleveland St. On this corner is the historic Rose Hotel where you can join students from nearby Sydney Uni for a drink before heading home.

From here, walk up Cleveland St and cross City Road, where you can catch a bus back to Railway Square or Circular Quay. Hope you had a great day!
